Bottom painting your boat is less about the aesthetic factors and more about the quality and care of your vessel. Every vessel undergoes typical everyday wear and tear through the water, but constant exposure can have a negative effect if not protected. Anti-Fouling paint, also known as bottom paint, is applied to prevent the growth of organisms attached to the hull which could affect the vessel’s speed, performance, and durability.
At The Boat House, we use antimicrobial paint, a paint that stops the growth of microorganisms. We begin the bottom painting process by soaking the vessel in the water for a day or two. This shows the appropriate water line to adjust the paint level. Once soaked, hull prep starts by roughing the hull exterior in order for the paint to properly adhere to the vessel. After this step is complete, the vessel is ready for two coats of primer and two coats of paint. Due to the vessel’s ablative properties, bottom paint is normally maintained yearly to insure the vessel’s protection.
