How to Properly Use a Anchor Windlass with Jeremy Eck

By Marshall Nicholson | Apr 05, 2021 | Boating Tutorials

The Lewmar Pro-Fish Windlass is a 100% stainless steel multifunctional super machine. The Pro-Fish has the ability to do both freefall mode and manual mode. Whether you’re 50 miles off shore or at the beach in shallow water, dropping your anchor is a breeze. In this video, The Boat House of Naples manager, Jeremy Eck explains How to Properly Use an Anchor Windlass.

Jeremy Eck is operating on a Sportsman 252 using the Lewmar Pro-Fish Windlass. The Sportsman 252 has controls at the helm and the bow, providing convenience when operating your anchor.

Free Fall Mode: To start off, Jeremy has the Windlass in free fall mode. Free fall mode is beneficial when you’re offshore in deeper waters needing to release the anchor a great distance. When he presses the “out” button (the Windlass down button) it will loosen up the clutch and allow the anchor rode to free fall and continue falling. Once you go to tighten the rode, it will tighten the clutch back up and start pulling it in to lock in place.

Manual Mode: Manual mode is convenient when you are in shallower waters because you have more control. Located on the top of the Windlass is a button that will allow you to switch to Manual mode. Press it in and you will hear it lock in place. As you press “out” on your controls to release the anchor rode, the Windlass will only allow out the amount that you have set. When it is time for you to bring it back in, it is already tightened. If you are done with that position and wish to return to free fall mode, there is a pin located on the side of the Windlass. Pull this pin out and it will return to free fall mode.
