How to Set a Waypoint on a Garmin Marine GPS with Jeremy Eck

Published

So long are the days of using landmarks to remember your favorite fishing spot. With Garmin GPS products, all of your treasured locations can be saved by simply tapping a button. In this video, The Boat House of Naples Store Manager, Jeremy Eck shows you how to set a waypoint on a Garmin GPS.

This video was filmed on a Sportsman 312 Center Console and Jeremy Eck is operating dual Garmin 8617s. This is the first episode of The Boat House Electronics 101 series.

On most Garmin touchscreen products, there is a “waypoint” button in the bottom left hand corner. Once you select this option, a variety of your saved waypoints will appear to choose from. This will also provide the opportunity to create a new waypoint, located on the right hand side of your screen.

You can choose to begin programming your waypoint by entering coordinates, using the chart, using your current position or by entering range/bearing.

Creating Waypoint Using Your Current Position:

Begin by selecting “Use Current Position.” The Garmin GPS will drop a pin at your current location. The screen will showcase your location, as well as provide options to edit and save your waypoint.

Creating Waypoint Entering Coordinate:

Begin by selecting “Enter Coordinate.” Then, you will be provided with options to enter North or South Coordinates. Once you have finished entering your coordinate, you will have the option to edit, save or navigate to your desired location. By selecting “Navigate To,” the GPS system will display a map and a straight line to the coordinates that you supplied.

Creating Waypoint Using Chart

Begin by selecting “Use Chart.” This will automatically pull up a map, that you have the ability to zoom in and out of using the touchscreen system. If you see a spot on the map that you would like to visit, simply select the location by tapping on the screen and hit “Set Position” located in the top right hand side of your screen.

Creating Waypoint Using Sonar

On the Homepage of the Garmin GPS system, select “Sonar” on the right hand side of the screen. While out on the water, if you see a spike on the sonar, mark this location by selecting “Pause” in the bottom left hand corner. The GPS system will capture the paused location. At the bottom of the screen, you can select “Mark” which will mark that position, allowing you to name and edit.
